Green Bay Spent Big and Stayed Exactly Where It Was

A 9-7-1 record that the math says was real — and an offseason that didn't move the needle.

1 · THE YEAR THAT WAS

The 2025 Packers finished 9-7-1, and the first thing worth knowing is that the record wasn't a mirage. Green Bay's point differential was +31, which translates to 9.4 structural wins under our points-per-win model — almost exactly what the scoreboard showed. The luck delta was +0.1. That's about as clean an audit as you'll see: no borrowed wins, no hidden losses, just a team that played to its level over seventeen weeks.

The one soft spot in the picture was close games. Green Bay went 4-5 in one-score decisions, which is where variance tends to pool. But with a structural win total that already matches the actual record, there's no real correction waiting on either side. This wasn't a nine-win team hiding a twelve-win talent base, and it wasn't a twelve-win team that ran cold. It was a nine-win team, full stop. That honesty matters because it sets the ceiling for what the offseason needed to accomplish.

2 · WHAT WORKED, AND WHY

The passing offense was the engine. Jordan Love and company produced 0.24 EPA per attempt — a number that puts Green Bay comfortably in the upper tier of passing attacks. The run game was essentially neutral at -0.03 EPA per carry, which is fine as long as it isn't asked to do too much. The offense converted 53.1% of its third and fourth downs, and it posted 0.07 EPA per play in the red zone. Neither number is elite, but both are solidly functional. The Packers weren't a team that manufactured yards and then went sterile inside the twenty.

Defensively, the picture is a little more nuanced. Opponents generated 0.09 EPA per pass attempt against Green Bay — not alarming, but not a strength either. Against the run, the Packers were quite good: -0.03 EPA per carry allowed, matching their own ground game in efficiency. The defense was built to stop the run and bend-but-not-break through the air, which is a serviceable posture if the offense is doing its part.

Matt LaFleur's decision-making in 2025 cost the team an estimated 0.22 expected wins — a modest but real drag. His actual go-for-it rate on fourth down was 23.8%, against a model-recommended 31.3%. He agreed with the model's call 80% of the time, which is respectable, but the gap on aggressiveness has a measurable price. It's not a crisis, but it's a known inefficiency, and it's consistent enough to note on the ledger.

3 · THE LEDGER

Green Bay's offseason movement was heavy in volume and nearly flat in production value. On the departure side: Malik Willis (QB, to Miami, $22.5M APY, 1.85 market wins), Romeo Doubs (WR, to New England, $17M APY, 1.37 market wins, 0.01 production wins), Quay Walker (LB, to Las Vegas, $13.5M APY, 1.07 market wins), Elgton Jenkins (LG, to Cleveland, $12M APY, 0.94 market wins), Dontayvion Wicks (WR, to Philadelphia, $10.25M APY, 0.79 market wins, -0.01 production wins), and Kingsley Enagbare (ED, to the Jets, $9M APY, 0.68 market wins). That's nearly 6.7 market wins walking out the door.

The arrivals were modest by comparison. Javon Hargrave (IDL, from Minnesota, $11.5M APY, 0.9 market wins) and Benjamin St-Juste (CB, from the Chargers, $5M APY, 0.33 market wins) replace a fraction of what left. The net offseason swing on a market-win basis is -5.47. On a production basis, given how little the departures actually produced, it's zero. Green Bay didn't lose much real value — they just paid a lot to exit contracts that weren't producing at their price points, and replaced them cheaply.

The contract verdicts are where the story gets uncomfortable. Christian Watson's four-year, $23M APY extension grades as an overpay: 97th percentile in pay, 43rd percentile in production, with an aging multiplier of 0.75 — meaning our curves expect a meaningful step down from here. The exit ramp is 2028, with $21M in dead money. Jayden Reed's three-year deal at $16.75M APY grades as fair: 96th percentile in pay, but 80th percentile in production at 25, with an aging multiplier of 0.92 and a manageable $10M dead-cap exit in 2028. Devonte Wyatt's three-year, $18.3M APY sits at 96th percentile in pay with production data incomplete — it grades WATCH on price discipline alone. Two of three major contract decisions this offseason carry meaningful risk flags. The comp-pick pipeline does offer some cushion: Green Bay projects two fourth-rounders and two fifth-rounders in 2027, worth a combined 1.16 wins in our draft model.

4 · HELP OR HURT

The honest answer is: neither much. The production-win net is zero, which means the roster enters 2026 carrying essentially the same talent base it had in 2025. The market-win swing of -5.47 looks alarming until you remember that most of those departing contracts were already underwater — Doubs at 0.01 production wins on a $17M market tab, Wicks at -0.01 on $10.25M. Paying to shed dead weight isn't the same as losing value, even if the accounting looks ugly.

The bigger concern is what the cap sheet reveals about resource allocation. Green Bay is spending at the 97th percentile of the market on a wide receiver — Watson — whose aging multiplier of 0.75 is the sharpest downward flag in the brief. That's not a scouting opinion; it's the pattern our aging curves see in receivers at 26 who haven't yet produced at the top quartile of their position. The Watson deal is the albatross on this roster: 85th-percentile pay against 43rd-percentile production, with $21M in dead money standing between the team and any exit before 2028. The RB group is the other notable spending outlier, running 1.81 standard deviations above the league average in cap allocation — meaningful when the rushing EPA was essentially flat last year.

LaFleur's fourth-down conservatism is a real but small tax — about a fifth of a win per year by our model. It doesn't move the needle much, but it's consistent and correctable. The Packers don't need a coaching change to fix it; they need LaFleur to push his go-rate a few percentage points closer to what the model recommends. That's a conversation, not a crisis.

5 · THE NUMBER

The arithmetic is straightforward. Green Bay's structural base from the 2025 point differential is 9.4 wins. The offseason adds zero on a production basis — the arrivals offset the real value of the departures with nothing left over. LaFleur's decision-making carries a small negative drag, but it was already baked into last year's performance, so the delta from 2025 to 2026 is also zero. Structural wins 2026: 9.4.

That is an accounting projection from the ledger — not a betting model output, not a pick. It reflects what the point differential and the transaction record say the team should win, absent schedule variance and injury luck. The falsifier is simple: if Green Bay wins fewer than eight games, the roster regression from the Watson aging curve and the offensive line transition landed harder than expected; if they win twelve or more, Love took a leap that the efficiency numbers hadn't yet shown, or the defense improved past what the EPA profile suggested. Either result would tell us something the current data doesn't. A nine-or-ten-win season would mean nothing surprising happened.

6 · DFS & FANTASY

The departures left three piles of opportunity on the table. Doubs accounted for 85 targets and 165.4 PPR points in 2025. Wicks added 46 targets and 75.8 PPR points. Willis contributed 22 carries and 51.2 PPR points on the ground. That's 131 combined targets and roughly 241 PPR points of vacated volume in a passing offense that posted 0.24 EPA per attempt — a legitimate environment for someone to absorb a real target share.

The sleeper case belongs to Jayden Reed, but not quite in the traditional sense — he's already known. The more interesting question is which lower-cost receiver steps into the Doubs role. The brief doesn't name a specific absorber from the arrivals, which is itself informative: St-Juste is a cornerback, and Hargrave plays interior defense. The target vacuum is real and currently unaddressed by the ledger's reported moves. Whoever fills it — whether from within the existing depth chart or a late addition — inherits a high-EPA passing attack with a genuine hole at the second receiver spot.

The aging flag on Watson is worth stating plainly for DFS purposes. A 0.75 aging multiplier means our curves expect roughly a quarter of his peak production to erode from here. That's not a hard fade every week, but at 97th-percentile market pricing, Watson is unlikely to be cheap in salary or ownership. Paying top dollar for a receiver on the wrong side of his aging curve, in a role where the target competition just got thinner, is the kind of mismatch that tends to disappoint over a full season even if it pops on any given Sunday.
